How To Make A Long Distance Relationship Work

How To Make A Long Distance Relationship Work

Sometimes it just happens that you meet someone special but they don’t live near you. Or, you’ve gotten close to someone but they have to leave for school or a new job. It can be tough keeping a long distance relationship strong, but with the right outlook, and some good advice, you can have a wonderful relationship even if you’re not in the same town.

The first thing that you need to be aware of is that all relationships have challenges, and long distance ones have even more. It will take two people who are able to communicate and are mature enough to handle the stress of this type of relationship. If you don’t think you can handle it than do both of you a favor and just end it, otherwise you may cause yourself, and your partner, a lot of unnecessary pain.

If the two of you decide that a long distance relationship is something that you can handle, you need to make sure you are both in agreement when it comes to the boundaries of your relationship. For example, are you going to be monogamous or are you each allowed to see other people when you are apart. When it comes to this issue don’t assume that you are both thinking the same way, make sure you talk about it so there is no room for misunderstanding. If the two of you can’t agree on this point, then you won’t be able to have a relationship.

It’s important that you both understand that if you can make this work, it could very well be the best relationship you’ve ever had and one big reason for that is the distance forces the two of you to connect on an emotional level much more than on a physical level. While this factor can be a challenge it can also allow you to truly and deeply love each other and know that the love you feel is real and that it isn’t just a physical attraction.

Attraction is an important part of a relationship but it can also make it easy to overlook other things, like incompatibility. You aren’t going to be spending all your time in bed, and if you don’t have other things in common the relationship will quickly fade away. The distance will ‘force’ the two of you to build something more than just an intimate relationship.

It’s important that the two of you are able to deal with jealousy. You will each be likely to meet others when the two of you are apart, and neither of you can jump to conclusions that the other is doing something they shouldn’t be doing. Trust is even more important in a long distance relationship than in a normal relationship.

Having a good relationship is a wonderful gift, if that gift comes in the form of a long distance relationship than just know that you can make it work as long as the two of you are able to honestly and openly communicate and act like mature adults instead of jealous children. Good luck.
